CBSA Updates Operating Hours at Border Ports
Trade Update • Nov. 18, 2024
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has announced revised service hours at 35 land ports of entry across Canada, effective January 6, 2025, at 12:01 am (local time).
This adjustment, developed in coordination with the United States, seeks to bolster the security measures of both nations while ensuring an optimal allocation of CBSA resources. By focusing personnel on busier ports of entry, the CBSA aims to improve its capacity to manage travelers and goods efficiently while upholding strong enforcement standards.
Reasons Behind the Changes
These changes are in line with measures introduced by the United States to enhance the management of inadmissible travelers and goods at the border. The decision is informed by an assessment of traffic patterns and operational demands. Many of the impacted ports report processing fewer than two vehicles per hour during off-peak times, and alternative ports of entry are accessible within a 100-km radius.
The adjustments aim to reduce any potential disruption for border communities while enabling both nations to allocate resources effectively to areas of greater need.
