U.S. Tariff Amendement Announced March 6, 2025

The U.S. Tariff Amendment Announced March 6, 2025

On March 6th, the United States President amended his IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Powers Act) tariffs of 25% on Mexico and Canada.

For Mexico:

  • The effective date is 12:01 a.m. Eastern time, March 7, 2025
  • Any Mexican-origin goods that qualify for free entry under the USMCA will NOT be subject to the additional 25% duties.
  • Potash that does not qualify for duty-free treatment under the USMCA will be subject to a 10% duty (in lieu of the 25% duty).
  • There is no end date for this exemption for Free Trade Agreement (FTA) qualifying goods.

For Canada:

  • The effective date is 12:01 a.m. Eastern time, March 7, 2025.
  • Any Canadian-origin goods that qualify for free entry under the USMCA will NOT be subject to the additional 25% duties.
  • Potash that does not qualify for duty-free treatment under the USMCA will be subject to a 10% duty (in lieu of the 25% duty).
  • There is no end date for this exemption for FTA-qualifying goods.

This means we had tariffs for 3 days on all Mexican and Canadian origin goods.

The exemption is NOT retroactive, thus those goods imported during the 3-day period are stuck, subject to tariffs.

As you can tell, these tariffs are a very fluid issue. We will continue to update you as it develops.

As of this moment, there is no official release as to whether Canada will respond with an update or pasue the United States Surtax Order (2025-1).
